The legend of Galatzó
Mallorca's best-known ghost belongs to this mountain. The Comte Mal, the "evil count", was a real man: Ramon Burguès-Zaforteza, 17th-century Count of Santa Maria de Formiguera, whose estates included Galatzó. His violent attempts to enforce feudal rights over the people of Santa Margalida turned him into legend.
Folk tradition says his damned soul rides the Galatzó estate on a black horse wreathed in flame. Some tellings give the horse a green coat that reeks of sulphur, and place the sightings on cold November nights when the wind and distant dogs howl.
Another version, collected by students of the University of the Balearic Islands, tells of a stolen bride, a heart buried in a stone, and a count who still circles Galatzó looking for her. Put your hand on the stone, they say, and you can feel it beat.
The mountain keeps other stories too: Muslims who hid here after the Christian conquest, snakes that gather on its north face in winter, and the claim that Galatzó is the most magnetic mountain in Europe.
Every Tramuntana village has a story. Ours rides a burning horse.

The tales locals tell, and the ones the archaeologists keep adding to.
Guillem Rosselló Bordoy excavated the Bronze Age talaiot of Serral de ses Abelles in 1950. Almost seventy years later, in 2019, researchers Jaume Deyà and Pablo Galera identified a sword from the site, made around 3,200 years ago at the end of the Talaiotic era. It now hangs in the Museu de Mallorca in Palma.
The main altar in Puigpunyent's parish church of the Assumpció did not start life here. It first stood in Palma Cathedral before it was brought up the valley to the village.
The hamlet above Puigpunyent took its name from its resemblance to Galilee. Around 300 people live there today, around a church begun in 1806 and a terrace that looks out over the southwest slopes to the sea.
Before refrigerators, winter snow was packed into stone ice houses in the mountains. Galilea's Casa de Neu on Carrer de Sa Mola Gran stored ice until 1917, and it is the only snow house in Mallorca that sits inside a village centre.
Springs and channels laid out under Islamic rule still feed the valley. At Son Nét they once turned several grain mills and a paper mill, long before the estate became one of the island's grandest hotels.
Galilea keeps the Molí d'en Martí, a 19th-century windmill thought to be older than its neighbour Can Soler, plus the 18th-century well of Pou des Rafal and a house known for its painted roof tiles.
